Fun FACTS ABOUT WSS!
What is the Washington School Show (WSS)?
The WSS is an annual musical production that’s written, produced, directed and performed solely by Washington School parents and teachers. The WSS is our school’s largest fundraiser.
How long has the Washington School Show been going on?
The WSS tradition began in 1948 as a PTO skit at the former Grant School. Last year was the 70th annual production!
How much money does the Show raise and what is the money used for?
The Show raises between $25,000 and $30,000 every year. Proceeds are used to fund a wide variety of educational programs, equipment and teacher grants to enrich our children’s learning, as well as many activities outside the classroom that make Washington School the special place that it is!
How many people are involved in the Show?
Every year over 100 Washington School parents, teachers and alumni volunteer their time to write, produce, direct, act, dance , sing, paint, sell, promote, build, sew, design and do whatever it takes on stage or behind the scenes to make each year a success.
Do I need theater experience to be a part of the show?
No experience required! The only thing you need is the desire to have fun and meet new people!
Do I have to be on stage to be part of the show?
While being on stage is a lot of fun, if performing isn’t your thing, there are lots of other ways to get involved from ad sales to set painting to concessions.
How much of a time commitment is the show?
Your level of involvement in the show is up to you. For performers, rehearsals for the show begin the first week of January and culminate in performances the last weekend in January. Depending on how much you’d like to perform, rehearsal schedules vary from 1-5 days per week. Rehearsals are held on weekday evenings and on weekend days.
“Behind-the Scenes” jobs vary. Some can be done from home (ad sales, publicity, props), while others require attendance at some rehearsals and the actual performances (stage crew, tickets, concession sales, etc.)
Why should I get involved in the Washington School Show?
Two reasons – your kids and you (not necessarily in that order!) In addition to raising money for important enhancements to our school that directly benefit our children, your kids will love seeing you on stage or just knowing that you were a part of this incredible production! Kids love watching the show and many go to more than one performance!
You will have the time of your life! What other opportunity do we have as adults to tap into our creative sides, make new friends, and come together as a community in this unique way! And let’s be honest, there are lots of parties!
